Hay Square Baler

A square baler is a farm machinery designed to efficiently gather and compress agricultural materials, such as rice straw and hay, into rectangular bales for easy handling, storage, and transport. It plays a vital role in the process of harvesting and managing crop residues or fodder.

Square balers are primarily used to collect, compress, and bind straw or hay into compact rectangular bales. These bales are easier to handle, store, and transport than loose materials. To begin the process, the square baler is connected to a tractor. The tractor moves along the field as the baler’s pick-up mechanism collects the straw or hay. The pick-up consists of rows of closely spaced tines or augers that lift and feed the crop into the baler.

As the crop material is fed into the baler, it passes through a series of belts or rollers that compress it tightly. The baler’s plunger moves back and forth, pushing the crop material against the forming chamber, which shapes it into a rectangular bale. Once the desired size and density are achieved, the baler’s knotters or twisters tie the bale with twine or wire, securing it for handling. The completed bale is then ejected from the baler onto the ground or onto a bale wagon or trailer.
