SB Shear Bolt Torque Limiters

The SB Shear Bolt Torque Limiter is a device designed to protect power take-off (PTO) shafts and connected equipment from damage due to excessive torque or overload. PTO shafts are commonly used in agricultural machinery and industrial equipment to transfer power from a tractor or engine to various implements.

The Shear Bolt Torque Limiter is installed between the tractor’s PTO output shaft and the input shaft of the driven equipment. Its primary function is to limit the amount of torque that can be transmitted through the PTO system. This helps prevent damage to both the equipment and the PTO shaft itself in the event of a sudden overload or jamming of the driven implement.

The torque limiter consists of two main components: a hub and a series of shear bolts. The hub is connected to the PTO output shaft, while the driven equipment is connected to the hub via a splined or keyed connection. The shear bolts are inserted through the hub and secured with nuts. These bolts are designed to shear or break when a specified torque level is exceeded, thereby disengaging the PTO shaft from the driven equipment.

When an overload occurs, such as a sudden jamming of the implement or excessive resistance, the torque in the system increases rapidly. If the torque exceeds the predetermined limit, the shear bolts will shear off, disconnecting the PTO shaft from the driven equipment. This action prevents the transmission of excessive torque and protects both the equipment and the operator from potential damage or injury.

After the shear bolts break, they need to be replaced before the PTO system can be used again. This ensures that the torque limiter is functional and can provide ongoing protection. The shear bolts are typically designed to be easily replaceable, allowing for quick and convenient maintenance.

The SB Shear Bolt Torque Limiter is an important safety feature for PTO-driven machinery, as it helps prevent costly damage and downtime. It is essential to select a torque limiter that matches the power requirements of the equipment and provides adequate protection for the intended application.
